It's not mandatory - but if the guy is quick why not? Give him a buck or two depending on the weather and the amount of time it takes.
In some states like Michigan, the cost to have someone pump the gas is 50 to 60 cents per gallon more than self-serve. And they are sllooowwww....

It depends - I think there is a state somewhere in which the law states that an attendant must pump the gas. In that case, I would not tip because you have no choice but to have your gas pumped by someone.
If you choose to go to a gas station where someone does it for you as opposed to going to one where you do it yourself, then I think you need to tip.

I've never heard of tipping, but then again most gas stations are self serve where I live and the ones that serve charge more. I can see if they wiped your windshield and checked the oil like they used to then maybe a tip is in order.

interior america of a, in basic terms 2 states with the help of regulation dictate that all and sundry gasoline stations are finished service - Oregon and New Jersey. My granny lived her entire life in New Jersey with out ever touching a gasoline pump. She additionally in no way tipped the attendant. . the place I stay, maximum each gasoline station is a self-serve. in case you have the alternative at a station, you will word that the fees are many times different in line with gallon for finished serve as against self serve. wager which one you pay extra for? that's not required, nor even regularly occurring in maximum places.

No, but you can I suppose. Some states don't allow self-service I found out. I was in New Jersey and got out to pump my own gas and a guy said you can't.

Only if its voluntary. In NJ for example you are not allowed to pump your own gas so you dont have to tip. But if you choose not to pump your own, you really should tip.

Good question, I never do. I have when I have asked the guy to fill my car with wiper fluid or oil but never just to pump my car with gas.

I've never heard of such a thing. If the minority is tipping then the attendant will cop an attitude to the majority that don't. Stop this immediately people. It's their job for which they are paid.

I didn't know there were any of those left. I thought it was all pump it yourself these days. But, it would be nice to give him a dollar or two.

I pumped gas in Junior High during the '60's. There was no such thing as self service. I earned my tips by using a vac cleaner on the floors and ash tray, checking the air in all four tires, checking the oil, checking the windshield washer fluid, and washing the windshield. I will always pay more per gallon and tip $2 if the attendant will do most or all of the above. To just pump the gas alone? No tip, you are paying more for the gas and the attendant has done nothing extra to earn a tip. - Gary

if they only pump the gas...no, they are already paid for that
if they do something beyond what they are required to do, like washing windows, checking tires, etc...then yes.

No, and I never have either, they raise the price of full service by 10 cents a gallon.

I tip a buck or two if its cold outside. Otherwise I fluctuate. If they are super nice to me and its warm outside I will still tip.

Yes. I think you use the same rule that you use when you go out to eat. 15 percent.

Not in NJ...since you cannot pump your own gas. Anywhere else I'm sure a dollar or two would be appreciated.
