Why do people always sit down at the dirty table in a restaurant?

as in not give the waiter or waitress to clear the table first, and quite often when there is a clean table in the restaurant anyway.

I always find it funny when there are a lot of clean tables but they want the one dirty one. I haven't figured this one out yet. I know I wouldn't want to sit at a dirty table who knows what the people before you did there and when people are already sitting at it you can't clean it as well.

Most people who do this have forgotten how to be patient and wait their turn and are trying to get a table before it is even cleaned and before anyone else just like them grabs it.
If I encounter this dirty table situation somewhere like a park or at an outdoor eating place that doesn't really have wait staff (like a zoo or Disney, etc). I get a few napkins and clean the table myself, if I can find water to wet the napkin, even better.

I think they're attention hogs. They think just because they walked through the wait to be seated sign and sit down at a dirty table, the waitress immediately scurries over to clean it, they act all pompous, and then order drinks and demand a menu while the waitress still has the dishrag in her hand.
Trust me, people can be jerks, it's happened to me many more times than I can count.

I've wondered this myself. When I was working in restaurants, it seemed that more often that not; people would choose a dirty table over a clean one.

If it is my favorite table I will ask that it be cleaned while I stand close by while it is done. I think many people get attached to a favorite table at a favorite restaurant.

Because they want to get that table before someone else sits down to it. If they really like where the table is located, or liek the fact thats it's a table or booth, they want to get to it, knowing that the server will be kind enough to understand, and to wipe down the table when they get the time..

YuckâFor me it's the opposite. A couple times at Denny's they tried to seat me at a dirty table. If they aren't willing to clean the table before seating guest makes me wonder what they do in the kitchen. I don't go there anymore.

Im guessing is because either there in a hurry and cant wait for a busboy to clean up the table or just dirty themselves

I don't. All the restaurants I have eaten at has a hostess to seat you when a clean table is available. There is always a sign at the front entrance saying" "Please wait to be seated".

Oh, I NEVER do that! Isn't there usually a host or hostess to seat you anyway? It would probably ruin my appetite to sit at a dirty table!! ;)

To assure you get the table and make sure they clean it before you settle in.
