I went to Dennys today for the first time but was totally lost. I don't usually go to restaurants so I also don't know how to properly leave a tip.

At Denny's they pay upfront. I was so awkward trying to indicate that I didn't want change back because she was just going to give it back when i gave her my bill and money. I told her I wanted to leave that as a tip for the server, but I had no idea how to articulate myself lol and it came off really embarassing.

I understand its easy if I was using my card. But I ordered a small meal and was only tipping around 3.50$ so I obviously couldn't leave a bill at the table (canadian dollars)

I'm just not sure how this works.
****I understand tipping percentages, just not how to physically go about them. Please help!

You leave the tip on the table and ask at register if they could break a large bill to smaller bills if you do not have the correct amount you need to tip.

If I understand right, you don't have $1 bills or coins in your wallet or purse, just a large bill or bills.

What I do in that situation is go up to the register, get my change, and if the change is (say) $5.70, I tell them Could I have that in ones? Then I take two or three one's back and leave them where I was sitting, even if someone has already cleared the space.

It's not awkward to tell the cashier that you want to leave x amount for the server and leave it at the counter, either. Relax, they're there to serve you, and are not going to look down on you for leaving a tip, no matter how you do it.

You're supposed to leave the tip on your table. If you don't have the change - get it from the cashier, then go back and leave the tip on the table. Second, I never leave less than a $5 tip, only because that extra $1.50 isn't going to do me a bit of good (6 quarters? can't even do a wash with that anymore). But it means a lot to the servers. Even if my meal and coffee was only $6, I still leave a $5 tip. That's me. God has been extremely good to me and I like to give back.
