Does salad count as an appetizer?

For my friend's anniversary dinner we're going out so some Italian restaurant and I'm just checking out the menu online. Does a salad count as an appetizer?

Not really. In America the salad comes first. It fills your stomach somewhat so you'll eat less of the regular meal. In Europe, it is surved afterwards to help the digestive system. The appetizer is offered to stimulate the stomach to desire more food.
