Question:
New host at Olive Garden - couple questions?

So yesterday I got hired at a new Olive Garden in town as a hostess and I just had a few questions.

1) So on orientation day, the flyer says to come in "correct appearance for Orientation". Is that just really nice clothes (like interview clothes) or is does that mean come in the dress requirements they give us?

2) What should I expect on orientation day?

3) What's the hardest part about being a hostess? Is it hard to learn how to do it?

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks!

1) I would wear the requirements if they have been given other wise dress business casual. if in doubt you could always call and double check. (my first day I came in slacks and a nice sweater and was WAY over dressed)

2) expect to watch a few videos, meet with the manager, go over job expectations and requirements, fill out W2 forms ect.... might get to eat some appetizers. should take about 2 - 3 hrs ( be prepared to eat the whole menu for about the next week =)

3) I'm not a hostess but I know the worst part of the job is when people see empty tables and can't understand why you are making them wait. people can get pretty upset.

Good luck on your new job!!!! Darden is a great company to work for =)

1) Come in "correct appearance for orientation" and they gave you "dress requirements" I think I would go with the dress requirements. However, call and double check with Olive Garden!

2) You should expect to learn Olive Garden's policies and procedures; they will probably have you fill out your W2 forms, etc., you will probably get a schedule, and this is a good time to ask questions. Make a list of what you think you need to know.

3) Being a hostess is an easy job. The tough part is being able to interact with people (especially pushy types that want to be seated NOW). Another hard part is standing for your entire shift. You will get use to it. Wear comfortable shoes (that conform with your dress requirements). Also, wear your biggest smile and welcome your customers with open arms (so to speak).

Congrats on your new job! I personally love Olive Garden. I have never met an employee I did not like!

As a hostess/greeter, wherever you work, you'll be surprized at how many questions you get about the menu and other questions you didn't think you'd have to answer. But don't worry. You can always ask someone else and just try to eat there so you can give your opinion of the food. You're asked these questions because you're basically the 1st one they see when they enter the restaurant. Not trying to scare you but prepare you for things you might not have thought about. But over all it's pretty easy. Can get a bit boring until rush hour.

I am not a fan of the olive garden either. I am lactose intolerant and find very little one the menu I can eat. Everyone raves about the breadsticks...I hated them.
